 THE MOTORS.

On Saturday the motor exhibits at the Show were again a magnetic attraction, every display being thronged and the hard-worked attendants had a busy time answering more or less relevant inquiries. The motor was verywhere, and the majority of the sightseers appeared to know what they were talking about. On Saturday the commercial motor vehicle appeared to be the main feature. I Phizackerley has a large marquee tent in the Clydesdale-avenue and is showing a full range of cars under the charge of Mr. Bradley. The 20-h. p. Hupmobile runabout is in front of the show, and is displayed to advantage. A run into town was a good demonstration of the handiness of these little vehicles in the traffic. Talbot and Standard cars, both 12-h.p., are shown, and a 16-h.p.

Minerva Silent Knight looks well known. A range of spare parts and a new model torpedo body complete an exhibition that is worth seeing.

Perdriau and Co. include in their exhibit a range of motor tyres, ranging from 700 x 85 to 910 m/m x 100 m/m. together with rubber buffers and bulbs. This firm has only been making motor tyres for about six months, and claims to have had good results.

The Great Eastern Motor Works has a substantial exhibit on Sutton-avenue, where they are showing a 20-h.p. Deasy car, a 12-h.p. N.A.G., and a 20-h.p. 2-ton Bernia lorry chassis. This firm has only recently started, but has good works at Rushcutter Bay, and solid agencies.

John McGrath and Co., Ltd., have a good stand in Clydesdale-avenue. The manager, Mr. Arthur A. Herman, has his display of Cadillac cars tastefully arranged. Lengths of carpet and ferns grouped around, with showcases of spare parts enhance the appearance of the exhibit. Three Cadillacs are shown all the standard 30-h.p. One is a coupe body, suitable for the professional man, one a touring body, and one a Limousine. These three types of finish and furnishing are popular.

Birt and Co., at the corner of Clydesdale avenue and Palace-street, have a large tent, and are showing samples of the Panhard touring cars, complete with body, and in chassis form. A Vulcan doctor's car and a light delivery van of the same make and a 4-ton

Hallford lorry similar to the type selected by the British War Office is well In front. The firm is also showing a good line of accessories and tyres.

Morfoot Bros., who, so far as motors are concerned, devote their attention to the Lacre commercial vehicle, have their exhibit of two  lacre chassis on the main Clydesdale-avenue, Mr. Ben. Morfoot, is looking after matters for the firm, and has been kept busy demonstrating that the commercial motor is a money proposition. The vehicles shown are 40/50  h.p., catalogued to carry 5 tons, but capable of shifting 8 tons, and a 2-ton 30/35-h.p.  both the lorries are sold-the 2-ton to Anthony Hordern and Sons, and the 5-ton to the Flemington Brick Works, Ltd., who have a similar vehicle already in commission carrying bricks. The Lacre looks strong, and the engine runs very quietly.

Rabone Brothers have an attractive stand in Clydesdale-avenue opposite the draught stallion pavilion. On the walls of the tent are shown photographs illustrating the early stages of the motor, dating from 1897, lent by Mr. W. McNeil. A full range of cars handled by the firm is shown, including some well finished samples of the Bell car, 16-h.p. and 20-h.p., the latter developing up to 26-h p. R.A.C. rating. Another nice-looking car is the Lancia, rated at 21-h.p. All the cars shown by this firm are the four-cylinder type, and the whole exhibition is neatly arranged.

The firm carry the agencies for the Briton, Pickard, Springuel, and Stoddart-Dayton cars, in addition to those already mentioned.

Hall Bros, have included in their exhibit a full range of their Ferro marine engines, ranging from 3-h.p. to 11-h.p.. The engines are shown complete, ready to be fitted in the hull, with propeller, shaft and all the necessary equipment.

Mr. Fred Hall is just now experimenting with a boat fitted with an 11-h.p. Ferro, and expects to be able to record a good speed in his trials during the next few days.

Moulder Bros, have a well -arranged exhibit in See-road. The 20-h.p. Sheffield Simplex torpedo body touring car, is a nice-looking vehicle, and attracts attention. The 20-h.p. American Cole car, complete with touring equipment is shown and well in front is the little 12-h.p. Imperial runabout chassis. It is of Belgian manufacture, and looks strong and serviceable. The cars shown are fitted up nicely. The T.A.C, or touring autocycle, is taking up a lot of attention. It is entirely different in type to the majority of motor cycles. With the upholstered seat, change lever, wide footboards, four-cylinder engine, and handle bar or wheel steering at will, it looks more like a miniature car on two wheels than a motor cycle.

Davies and Fehon Motor Department, are also well represented. A well-situated stand, with plenty of space, fronting Suttor-avenue, enabled the firm to make a good display of the cars handled by them. The star item is a fine-looking Metallurgique car, said to develop up to 55-b. h. p. It is catalogued at 20-h p ,

The furnishing is a dark brown leather, and the body, the product of Van Den Plas, the famous body-builder of Belgium, is finished in varnished aluminum, and was recently exhibited at the Olympia Show. This car is set low in the body, the seating being comfortable and luxurious. It is equipped with Beatonson patent wind shield, which allows adjustment to practically any angle. In addition, the firm is showing a range of Ford cars, 20-h p, with different types of bodies, a 20-h p five-seater Bianchi, and a 10-h. p. Isotta Franchini runabout, 10-h. p. four cylinder. The latter-mentioned model is fitted complete with hood, etc, and is designed for a doctors practice. A fine sample of the 14-h p Crossley car, which is said to develop up to 10-h p , is on the stand. This car Is specially designed for our country roads-high wheels, ample clearance, and the carburetor high up. The body is of the torpedo type.

Steenbohm, Limited, have a good display. At the majority of the motor exhibits the sign is up that the body part of the cars exhibited has been produced at the factory of Steenbhom's Limited and certainly wherever the car is shown the general workmanship and finish must be commended.

Stanton Cook, Limited (Fairfax and Roberts) -Mr. G. Stanton Cook is in charge of the Clement-Bayard exhibit on the Clydesdale avenue. Several types of the latest models of the Clement-Bayard cars are shown, but special attention is drawn to the 12/18-h. p. model. The great feature of the latest model is the simplicity of the engine and its accessibility, the magneto is high up and in front, and can be easily detached and the radiator is behind the engine allowing instant access to all working parts. This car is especially on ball joints and it is claimed that the engine will run 30 miles to the gallon.

MELBOURNE MOTOR SHOW.

In four months the first Melbourne motor exhibition will be opened at the Exhibition buildings. Arrangements had been made to hold the show at Easier, but owing to the Exhibition trustees having let the building up to the day before it was proposed to open the show, exhibitors were not given time to arrange their stands, and the show was postponed. A definite date has now been fixed, and the motor exhibition committee has arranged with the trustees of the exhibition to have the use of the buildings for seven days before the date of the opening of the show, in order to allow exhibitors time to dress and decorate their stands in an attractive manner.

The motor exhibition will be opened on August 31 and will continue throughout the Royal Agricultural Show week, closing on September 7. It will be open from 11 0'clock in the morning, until 10 o'clock at night so that farmers and other country visitors, after spending the day at Flemington inspecting sheep, cattle and horses, may pass an enjoyable and instructive evening at the motor exhibition.

Sydney forestalled Melbourne by holding the first motor exhibition in Australia, but it is confidently asserted that the forthcoming Melbourne motor show will surpass that of Sydney in the number, variety, and grouping of the exhibits. Not only have the majority of the Melbourne motor agencies applied for floor space, but the consuls representing several European powers have sought information in order that the manufacturers of motor cars and accessories in their respective countries who have no Victorian agencies, may be given an opportunity to apply for floor space. Many new firms will introduce their cars to Australia by a display at the Melbourne exhibition.

Particulars are being sent to the Royal Automobile Club, London, with which the Automobile Club of Victoria is affiliated, with a request that anyone seeking information be apprised of all the details of the show. Advertisements will be inserted in the English press directing attention to the exhibition and referring those desiring further information to the Royal Automobile Club.

There will be no haphazard arrangement of the exhibits. A colour scheme has been adopted and regulations are being framed governing the design of the stands. White will be the predominant colour, with line work of blue and gold. One of the rules reserved by the committee of management the right to refuse applications for floor space received after July 31, while another regulation states that all stands will be balloted for.

Dr. R. E. Weigall, president of the Automobile Club of Victoria, is the chairman of the committee of management which is assisted by three subcommittees the advertising show-stand and finance committees, Mr. F. Leslie, Bruford, Ludstone chambers, Collins-street, is the secretary.

The following firms have so far definitely signified their intention of taking part in the exhibition by making application for stands.

The Dunlop Rubber Company, the Continental C. and G. Company, Tarrant Motors Company, Meeks and Hunter, Motor Hire and Repair Company, Essendon Motor Garage, British Imperial Oil Company, India Rubber Company, Lincoln, Stuart, and Co., E. H. James Proprietary Limited, Till Motor Company, J. C. Brown and Co., Bennett, Wood and Roche, Michelin Tyre Company, Sunshine Motors Company, J. Flood and Co., E. Schultz, Canada Cycle and Motor Company, Vacuum Oil Company, J. A. Munro and Co., W. Keen and Co., Kellow Motor Company, "The Australian Motorist, Wiseman and Barrett, Ray W. Sandford, C. J. Goddard.

Principal amongst these may be mentioned the question of speed limits, and in this it will be shown how the Automobile Club might assist the Commissioner. Before any applications from councils for speed limits be entertained, the committee will suggest that they may be notified thereon, 60 that they might have an opportunity
of expressing their views upon the matter and offering suggestions. Another subject which will – be discussed concerns motorists just over the border in New Soutli Wales. As matters stand at present, a charge of 5/9 per week is made by the authorities upon this side, and this is naturally resented by car owners living just over the border who frequently have occasion to cross the river into this State for business reasons. The fee charged is quite ridiculous, and when we know that Victorians may enter New South Wales tree of any fee in this way it will be quite understood why N.S.W. motorists seek reciprocation. Mr. E. E. Edwards, a vice president of the club, has brought forward a proposal that the authorities here should charge £1 for a number-plate, which amount should be refunded upon return of the plate. This proposal is a most sensible one and it will be suggested that
it be made a regulation in the new bill to be introduced by the Chief Secretary.
Captain Eric Harrison arrived in Melbourne on Monday last from London to take up his appointment as chief of the aviation staff of the Commonwealth Military Forces. I understand that he is to be welcomed here at a special dinner to be arranged by old associates of Tarrant Motors Pty. Ltd., in whose service Captain Harrison spent some good part of his time.

Mr. Howard Lewis, director of the company, will, in all probability, preside.
The convener of the welcome is Mr. Maurice Shmith.
The other afternoon I had a most interesting chat with Mr. Jas. A. Munro who lately returned from an eight months' tour of England and the Continent.
Whilst on the other side Mr. Munro visited several of the great Motor Shows, including London Olympia, the Cycle and Cycle Car Olympia, the Paris Salon, the Brussells Show, the Pleasure Car and Commercial Vehicle Shows at Manchester, and the Aero Show at the Paris Salon. Some excellent views of various stands at the Paris Salon and London Olympia were gathered by Mr. Munro showing, amongst others, the Clement-Bayard and
Mors stands.
Visits were paid to the Imperia works and the Springuel factories at Huy and Liege.

Mr. Munro also witnessed some very fine feats of aviation at Hendon and Brooklands. The Mors and Bayard works at Paris were visited, also the Crossley gas engine and the Crossley motor car factories at Manchester, and the "lvarrier" works at Huddersfield. Wonderful, indeed, were all these great motor homes, and all growing rapidly.
They are eye-openers to the whole world upon the motor car status of to-day. At the Clement-Bayard works they are now working upon a cycle car, and may produce one for the market. Questioned upon the prospects of the cycle car, Mr. Munro whilst expressing some doubts, could not say exactly how it might go ahead, as time would prove everything. He ventured to opine that motorists would prefer, always, the motor car, which costs so little more. The aeroplane, from what he could gather amongst commercial men on the other side, has no commercial future, save for military purposes. This was the general opinion in France and England.
Continuing, Mr. Munro said he had visited Woolwich Arsenal, and saw much to wonder at and Ponder upon.
A call was made at Buckingham Palace, where a special feature, he remembered, was the great State coach, some 150 years old, with its great springs that presented a striking similarity to a new invention recently brought before motorists.
Mr. Munro took with him a Bayard car to point out to the manufacturers certain details of improvement to suit Australian conditions.
Whilst in England and on the Continent he motored a great deal, and spoke highly of English roads.
The motor trade is very brisk both in England and on the Continent, and there is no sign of any reduction of the prices of motor vehicles.
Indeed, the tendency generally is to raise them though prices may be reduced at all here, such will not be the case on the other side.
A word of praise was given by Mr. Munro for our drivers.
"They are as good here, if not better than in the other part of the world."
He heard-more gear-banging in England and France than ever he heard in Australia.
It is seven and a half years since Mr. Munro last visited the Old Country, but he noticed immediately that, thanks to the motor vehicle, the traffic in London streets is much easier and better regulated. There are scarcely any blocks, for the traffic is cleared much faster and with greater precision.
Two constables would take complete charge at wide and busy intersections, and they would move methodically at regular intervals from side to side, first holding up the vehicles coming and going over one street, and then the other. The constables would not stand in the center of the roadways, but stand at the head of the traffic coming along on the left, and thus hold it up.
Motor 'buses are to be seen everywhere, though there are still a few horse 'buses, privately owned, to be seen. One might imagine the vast number of taxi-cabs on the streets when, with 5000 taxi drivers on strike, no difficulty was experienced in obtaining taxi-cabs. The strike was hardly noticed, so many cabs being always available.

Mr. Munro discovered on reaching London that no fee for his car would be charged until after four months in England. He tendered a fee, and applied for a license, but upon stating he had just arrived in England from the Continent, he would not be required to pay for the time I have stated. A telephone
message to headquarters brought him in reply his numbers, and he merely had them fixed to his cur. His driving license was issued for twelve months upon payment of 5/. This covered car or motor cycle.

During the whole time Mr. Munro drove his car over London streets he never once met with any accident. His guards and lamps were uninjured, save in one instance where a cart bumped into his tail light. In Paris one had to be extremely careful, as drivers are inclined to rush about anywhere at any odd moment. Mr. Munro states the very latest models of cars were not to be seen at Olympia.
London Olympia is small compared to the Paris Salon. They talk of removing the show to the White City this year. One feature in motoring is noted the electric lighting upon cars. This is growing every day or, rather, night and most cars to be seen on the roads are going in for electric lighting.

Mr. Munro witnessed the Talbot record-breaking at Brooklands, and himself drove upon a Mors car round Brooklands Track at .over 60 miles per hour. "It's a world of motors on the other side," remarked Mr. Munro, "and the world keeps growing."
When in England Mr. E. Wagstafi will visit the R.A.C., the Motor Association and Motor Union to inquire thoroughly into and obtain all data and details of management of tours for motorists, the special facilities arranged for motorists visiting Europe, and other matters in connection with tours and touring. His report, upon return, should prove of the greatest value to the A.C.V.
The secretary of the Automobile Club has corresponded with the authorities regarding accommodation for motorists and "their cars, at Buffalo. The matter is under consideration, and a reply has been received to the "©Sect that a shelter shed is to be erected as soon as the money for same is available.

Je l'ai fait ce 30 décembre 2017 avec le message suivant :

Dear Mr. Provan

I would like to know if there is still in Australia a SPRINGUEL brand car dating from 1911 to 1914 ?
Springuel is a Belgian manufacturer of automobiles from 1906 to 1914.
SPRINGUEL automobiles were imported to Australia by Jas. A. MUNRO at MELBOURNE. More than 10 cars were imported.
I thank you in advance for your help.

Guy Alexandre RAYMOND
J'ai eu ce 31 décembre la réponse ci-après:

Hello Guy and thanks for your email.

I’ve checked the Australian vehicle index database and there are no Springuel vehicles listed.  It would appear that the 10 or so Springuel cars that were imported to Australia have been sold and left our country.

Kind regards
